Why Did the Qiblah Change?
An incredible change that no one had imagined. During the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a change occurred that he desired Allah to bring. He would look toward the heavens and wait for when Allah would send revelation and this change would happen. Yes, today we are going to talk about the Qiblah. Perhaps many people do not know that today, whenever millions of Muslims stand to pray, they all stand facing only one direction. And that is the Kaaba. But do you know that in the early Islamic period, this was not the case? Rather, at that time, Salah used to be offered facing Masjid al-Aqsa. So today, we will talk about this very incident and understand what the reason behind it was. And we will understand what the incident regarding the desire of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was. We will talk about Masjid al-Qiblatain. And whether this change happened suddenly or not.
What Is Qiblah?
Qiblah is a direction towards which Muslims face while offering Salah. It represents discipline, unity, and obedience to Allah. Even though today we all face the Kaaba while offering Salah, as I mentioned earlier, this was not the case in the early Islamic period. Rather, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions used to offer Salah facing Masjid al-Aqsa. This used to happen during the stay in Makkah before the conquest, and in the early period of Madinah. Then later in Madinah, Allah’s command came that they should face the Kaaba while offering Salah.
Why Jerusalem?
Now many people may say: why Jerusalem? The answer is obviously known to many, but for those who do not know—Jerusalem is the third most holiest place for Muslims after Makkah and Madinah. Jerusalem is considered sacred not only in Islam, but also in Christianity and Judaism. Masjid al-Aqsa, which was first constructed by Prophet Adam عليه السلام. You can check the names given in the list below:
- Prophet Adam عليه السلام: Built the mosque (laid the foundation for the first time)
- Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام: Rebuilt
- Prophet Ishaq عليه السلام & Yaqub عليه السلام: Reconstructed (in charge of the mosque)
- Prophet Dawood عليه السلام: Commenced the reconstruction
- Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام: Completed the reconstruction
- Prophet Isa عليه السلام: Lived and worked around that area
- Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: Led all the Prophets in prayer before heading towards the heavens (Isra wal Mi’raj)
Just because this place is sacred for Muslims, where Allah sent many Prophets and Messengers, and all of them guided people towards Tawheed, this is the reason why Salah was offered facing this direction.
Migration To Madinah & Prophet’s Desire To Face Kaaba
And when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions migrated to Madinah and settled there, they saw that the Jewish population there was larger. After that, debates and discussions started happening, and this became very common. Despite all of this, Muslims were still offering Salah facing Masjid al-Aqsa. But still, the Jews did not accept faith and continued to live in their misguidance.
Despite the fact that Salah was being offered facing Masjid al-Aqsa, which was Allah’s command, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had the desire to not face Masjid al-Aqsa but rather to face the Kaaba while offering Salah. Whenever he would be alone, he would look towards the sky and wait for revelation—that when Allah would give the command to face not Masjid al-Aqsa but the Kaaba. Because the Kaaba was built by Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام and his son Prophet Ismail عليه السلام, and it represented pure monotheism. Then one day, Allah accepted the wish of His Prophet, and it is also written in the Qur’an that Allah said:
“We have certainly seen the turning of your face toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a Qiblah that you will be pleased with. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram…” (Qur’an 2:144)
This was a direct command, without any planning. And it was not a human decision. This decision came directly from Allah as a command that now they could face Masjid al-Haram, meaning the Kaaba, while offering Salah.

Immediate Change Of Qiblah During Salah
This change happened immediately. According to one narration, a Muslim group was praying in Masjid Banu Salamah. At that time, Masjid al-Qiblatain was called Masjid Banu Salamah, because the land on which this mosque was built in Madinah belonged to that tribe, so the mosque was named after them. But after this incident, the name of the mosque was changed to Masjid al-Qiblatain. So what happened was that a Muslim group was praying Salah when suddenly a companion came running quickly and explained the whole incident—that the Qiblah has changed and now the command is to face Masjid al-Haram instead of Masjid al-Aqsa.
Then immediately, the group that was praying turned their direction and faced Masjid al-Haram, meaning the Kaaba, and continued their Salah. This was a very famous and popular incident of that time. Even today, if you go to Madinah, you should definitely visit Masjid al-Qiblatain. There you will see a sign that shows that earlier Salah was offered facing Masjid al-Aqsa. But after this incident, we now face Masjid al-Haram.
Many people, such as the Jews, raised questions and criticized this incident, and used it against the Muslims. But Allah, not Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, gave a clear answer in the Qur’an:
“The foolish among the people will say, ‘What has turned them away from their Qiblah?’ Say, ‘To Allah belongs the east and the west…’” (Qur’an 2:142)
From this, we understand that direction itself is not sacred, but obedience to Allah is what matters. If Allah had commanded another direction, we would face that direction. Even if the Kaaba were removed, we would still face that place while offering Salah, whether the Kaaba is present there or not. Allah gave this command to test whether people would follow His command or create doubts. Most people obeyed, but there were some hypocrites who argued.
Impact On Islam?
This had a very strong impact on Islam. This one Qiblah gave Islam its own identity. Because facing Jerusalem was also something non-Muslims, like Jews, did in their worship. But the Kaaba gave Islam a unique identity. And it united all Muslims. No matter who they are, from which background, whether rich or poor, all stand in one direction while offering Salah. Standing side by side, without seeing wealth or status, everyone is equal.
Jerusalem Is Not Considered Sacred Anymore?
Only the direction of Qiblah was changed. This does not mean that the sacredness of Jerusalem is gone. No, not at all. Jerusalem was sacred, is sacred, and will remain sacred. It is more sacred for Muslims than even for Christians and Jews. Masjid al-Aqsa is still one of the most important and holiest places for Muslims. And one more reminder: many people do not know which mosque is Masjid al-Aqsa. People think that the golden dome structure is Masjid al-Aqsa. But that is not correct. The entire compound is called Masjid al-Aqsa. And the golden dome is also a mosque, but its name is Qubbat as-Sakhrah.
Conclusion
So this was the incident of the change of Qiblah. I hope that today you learned about this great event. You saw how in the early Islamic period during Makkah (before the conquest), and then in early Madinah after migration, Muslims used to face Masjid al-Aqsa while offering Salah. But Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had the desire to face the Kaaba, after which Allah immediately gave the command. And all the companions accepted it, except a few hypocrites. And today you also learned a new story about Masjid al-Qiblatain. So I hope you liked today’s article and that you learned something from it. That is all for today. We will meet again with a new topic.
Take care of yourself and your family. May Allah forgive all our sins and accept our supplications. Ameen.
