Watching Islamic Content But No Change? The Problem of Knowledge Without Action

ASSALAMU ALAYKUM

We are living in a generation that remains deeply connected to religion. You are absolutely right—this is the era of mobiles and computers where the internet holds total dominance. But what does the internet have to do with religion? It has everything to do with it.If you open any social media platform, whether it is YouTube or Instagram, you will find Islamic content everywhere, and in massive quantities. Whether it is through well-known scholars or Islamic knowledge shared via AI videos, people watch these videos a lot. However, even after watching for hours, the change that should occur in people does not happen. When people watch, they feel a temporary surge of motivation for a short time, but it does not last long. The problem is not a lack of knowledge; rather, the problem is “overconsumption.” People are watching more, but they are not acting upon it. Today, we will discuss this and understand the secret behind it.

LESS REMINDERS, MORE DOPAMINE

The Islamic shorts we see on YouTube and Instagram are often created in such a way today that they act less as reminders and more as “dopamine” for people. The editing, music, and nasheeds used in today’s shorts attract people emotionally. The atmosphere becomes such that a person starts viewing it less as a reminder and more as entertainment. Because of this, we develop a sort of habit. We watch these shorts for entertainment rather than for the reminder. There are edits made—just like people make edits of movies for entertainment—where Islamic reminders are edited similarly for entertainment purposes.

KNOWLEDGE WITHOUT ACTION

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that a person’s feet will not move on the Day of Judgment until they are asked: after having so much knowledge, did they act upon it?

Whenever you watch a reel, you gain knowledge. Once you gain that knowledge, it becomes your responsibility to implement and follow that reminder in your life. For example:

  • Backbiting is dangerous.

  • Lowering the gaze is mandatory.

  • Tahajjud has immense reward.

Even after knowing and having all this knowledge, if you do not act upon it, what is the point of that knowledge? The first time you hear a reminder, it forces you to think. But if you listen to the same reminder repeatedly without acting on it, it stops affecting you because you feel “this is a daily thing, what’s new in this?” This doesn’t mean the reminder is weak; it means you have “overconsumed” to the point where it no longer has an effect.

WATCHING ISLAMIC REELS FEELS PRODUCTIVE

When you watch Islamic reels, you feel like you are being productive. You feel like you are performing an act of worship. However, simply watching Islamic reels achieves nothing unless you implement them in your life. You might sit for hours watching Islamic podcasts, khutbahs, or debates, which might motivate you for a while, but then your daily routine starts again where you don’t take religion seriously and remain deprived of actual worship.

CONFUSION BECAUSE OF TOO MUCH EXPOSURE

When people watch online debates, they see many content creators talking about Islam. On one hand, you find well-verified and certified scholars, but on the other hand, there are people who have no connection to Islamic law or education but claim to be well-educated. They come and share their opinions on matters and start giving rulings. These online influencers confuse us about what is right and what is wrong. While certified scholars have one view on a topic, influencers who call themselves scholars share a different answer based on incomplete knowledge. This creates an atmosphere of confusion. People don’t understand what to do. Therefore, my suggestion is to take opinions only from:

  • Well-known certified scholars.

  • Authentic sources by searching on Google yourself.

  • Check the background of an influencer before taking their advice.

  • Seek opinions from multiple scholars.

  • Look for information yourself in the Quran and Sunnah.

  • Sunnah.com: A website for authentic Hadith.

  • Quran.com: A website for the Quran with translations.

Therefore, whenever you are looking for information online, gather it from authentic sources and take opinions from certified scholars. This is a major problem people face daily. Because of all these confusions, they feel that Islam is confusing or complicated.

IT’S NOT ABOUT INFORMATION, IT’S ABOUT TRANSFORMATION

Simply having information about Islam is not a big deal. Unless you implement it in your life, that knowledge has no value. Iblis also has information about everything. He was once a very pious servant of Allah, but he disobeyed Allah and became among the disbelievers. He still knows that Allah is the only God and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah. He knows about the Day of Judgment and he knows that what he is doing will lead him to Hell, yet he does not stop.

I am not comparing you to Iblis; rather, I am explaining that even if you know the difference between right and wrong, if you do not follow it, that knowledge has no value.

WHAT IS THE CURE FOR THIS?

The cure is very simple. All you have to do is stop when you watch a reel or gain knowledge online. Do not intake more content than that. Ask yourself:

What I am watching and what I have learned today—can I implement this in my life?

If the answer is yes, then first follow that thing in your life. Before moving to the next piece of information, implement things one by one.

  • Start with one reminder at a time.

  • Limit passive scrolling.

  • Use structured learning rather than random consumption.

  • Follow only a few reliable scholars.

  • Try to understand the Quran yourself.

  • Use and understand authentic Hadith.

The time you spend watching more reels of reminders, spend that same time following one reminder. Once you feel you have started following it consistently, then implement the next reminder. It is like a cycle.

CONCLUSION

The time we are living in is a blessed and golden opportunity where knowledge is available and accessible everywhere, and that too for free. You don’t need to go to a library where you have to pay to rent books; everything has moved online and access is completely free. Thousands of authentic Hadiths are available online. Debates, khutbahs, and podcasts of scholars from around the world are free online. But despite all this free knowledge, ask yourself: do you follow even one of these reminders?

Always remember, the more knowledge you acquire, the greater your responsibility becomes. And this knowledge is not just for you. If you have siblings or parents at home who do not know about this knowledge, it is your duty to share it with them. It is possible they are doing things contrary to Islam—like Bid’ah or something else—due to a lack of knowledge. If you know through authentic reels that something is wrong, you must explain it to them. If you know and still don’t explain, and they continue doing Bid’ah or sinning, that sin might be recorded in your account as well.

So, that was it. I hope you understand that having knowledge means an increase in responsibility. Whenever you see a reminder in a reel and learn something new, implement it in your life; do not just ignore it.

That is all for today. We will meet with a new topic next. Take care of yourself and your family. May Allah forgive all our sins and accept our supplications. Ameen.
