Ukashah ibn Mihsan (RA) Biography: The Sahabi Promised Jannah Without Reckoning
Assalamu Alaykum

There were thousands of companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, but among those thousands, only a few received extraordinary glad tidings. One of them was Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه.

Many people might not be familiar with this Sahabi, as his name is not mentioned frequently, but the honor he received is one of the greatest honors any human could achieve.

One day, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ declared that from his Ummah, 70,000 people would enter Paradise without any reckoning or punishment. Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه was one of those to whom the Prophet ﷺ personally gave this assurance. In this article, we will learn about the life of the man who attained such a high station.

BACKGROUND AND EMBRACING ISLAM

Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه belonged to the Banu Asad ibn Khuzaymah, a respected tribe in Arabia. He was born and raised in Makkah. His father's name was Mihsan ibn Hurthan, and while his mother’s name remains unknown to history, he had a sister named Umm Qays bint Mihsan رضي الله عنها.

He grew up in an environment dominated by idol worship, tribal pride, and injustice. Despite this, Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه was known for his courage, honesty, and strong character. When the message of Islam began to spread in Makkah, he accepted it with a sincere heart. Like other companions, he faced threats and pressure from the Quraysh, but he never abandoned his faith out of fear.

MIGRATION TO MADINAH

When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was commanded to migrate to Madinah, Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه was among those who made the journey. He left everything behind in Makkah—his home and belongings—and set out for Madinah with full tawakkul (reliance) on Allah.

MIRACLE DURING THE BATTLE OF BADR

Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه participated in the Battle of Badr. While he was fighting the enemy, his sword suddenly broke. He quickly went to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and explained what had happened. The Prophet ﷺ picked up a piece of wood, handed it to him, and said:

Strike with this.

By the power of Allah, that piece of wood was instantly transformed into a bright, sharp sword. Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه continued to fight with it throughout the battle. Later, this sword was named al-'Awn. He kept this miraculous sword with him for the rest of his life. He went on to fight in every major battle, including Uhud, Khandaq, Hudaybiyyah, Khaybar, and the Conquest of Makkah.

THE MOMENT OF ETERNAL HONOR

One day, while Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sitting in a gathering with his companions, he said:

Seventy thousand people from my Ummah will enter Jannah without reckoning.

Upon hearing this, Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه immediately stood up and said:

O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make me one of them.

The Prophet ﷺ replied:

You are among them.

Another companion then stood up and made the same request, but the Prophet ﷺ remarked:

Ukashah has beaten you to it.

This moment was a turning point that secured his success in both this life and the hereafter. He was known for his deep sincerity, night prayers, humility, and absolute trust in Allah. He lived a simple life and avoided fame or show-off.

MARTYRDOM OF UKASHAH IBN MIHSAN رضي الله عنه

Even after the death of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه remained a strong supporter of the first Caliph, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه. He fought bravely during the Ridda Wars (Wars of Apostasy).

During the Battle of Buzakha in Najd, he fought against the army of Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid, who at that time was a disbeliever claiming to be a prophet. During the conflict, Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه and another great companion, Thabit ibn Arqam رضي الله عنه, were martyred.

Years later, during the caliphate of Umar ibn Khattab رضي الله عنه, Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid returned, accepted Islam sincerely, and was welcomed back into the Muslim community.

CONCLUSION

This was the story of Ukashah ibn Mihsan رضي الله عنه. He did not come from a wealthy background, and he was raised in the midst of idolaters, yet he remained sincere and humble. His faith earned him a status that few can imagine—being personally guaranteed entry into Paradise without any questioning.

That is all for today. We will meet with a new topic next. Take care of yourself and your family. May Allah forgive all our sins and accept our supplications. Ameen.

Assalamu Alaykum
