Who Was Mus‘ab ibn Umayr (R.A.)? Biography, Life, and Sacrifice

ASSALAMU ALAYKUM

In the early days of Islam, when accepting the truth was just torture, boycott, and even death, there lived a young man in Makkah. He lived a life of great luxury and was counted among the wealthiest people in Makkah. Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه was famous for his clothes; he used to wear some of the finest fabrics in Makkah. His expensive perfumes, which his mother, Khunnas bint Malik, used to order for him from Yemen, were so distinct that when he passed by, people would know by the scent that it was none other than Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه. Everyone admired Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه because he was a very sincere young man.

EARLY LIFE:

We now know that Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه belonged to a wealthy family. His mother was very strict and possessed immense wealth. She fulfilled every wish of Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه, whether it was fine clothes, perfumes, or anything else. According to historians, Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه was known for his excellent attire.

WHEN HE ENCOUNTERED ISLAM:

As the message of Islam spread slowly and secretly in Makkah, Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه eventually heard about it. He overheard a man talking quietly about Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He also learned that this person, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was talking about one God. Following this, Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه went to Dar al-Arqam, where the Prophet ﷺ guided his companions. Initially, the message was spread secretly, but when Allah commanded that the message be delivered to all people, the Prophet and his companions publicly expressed their faith and explained the religion to others. When Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه went inside and heard the recitation of the Quran, faith ignited in his heart, and he accepted Islam in his heart. However, he had not told anyone about it yet—not even his mother.

WHEN HIS MOTHER DISCOVERED HIS CONVERSION:

When the mother of Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه found out, she became very angry and began to torture her own son. He was imprisoned by his mother. She stopped providing him with food and water and ceased all financial support. Things escalated to the point where his mother spoke of breaking her relationship with him and disowning him, thinking that doing this would make him leave Islam. But the faith of Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه was strong. Despite enduring such hardships, he kept his faith in Allah and His Prophet. The man who once wore the finest expensive clothes made of silk now wore old, torn clothes with patches on them. When the oppression against Muslims increased, many Muslims moved to Abyssinia (Ethiopia), and Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه was among them. This was another painful period where he and many other companions were expelled from their homes and became homeless.

THE FIRST AMBASSADOR OF ISLAM:

One day, during the first pledge of Aqabah, when a few people from Yathrib had accepted Islam, they told Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that they needed a man to go to Yathrib to tell the people there about Islam and guide them. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ chose Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه for this task because he was a young, sincere, and gentle person. He also had a good education in the Quran and possessed deep knowledge of it. Because of these qualities, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ chose Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه. His journey to Yathrib became a great lesson. Many people in Yathrib accepted Islam. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told him to go there, guide the people about the religion, provide education, and prepare Yathrib for the Hijrah (migration), which was completed very successfully.

A very famous incident occurred in Yathrib. When Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه told the people about the religion of Islam, a tribal leader named Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh رضي الله عنه, who was a disbeliever at the time, approached him in anger to speak with him. But Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه said to him:

“Sit and listen to what I am saying. If you like it, accept it. If you do not, I will leave from here.”

After hearing him, Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh رضي الله عنه immediately brought faith and accepted Islam. Because of his conversion, other people belonging to that tribe also accepted Islam. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once said:

“There is no young man in the Quraysh like this young man (Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه).”

In the Battle of Badr, Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه fought very bravely. He found his own brother among the disbelievers fighting against the Muslims, but he continued to fight for the truth without worrying about that, because those were the same people who had made him homeless.

BATTLE OF UHUD AND THE MARTYRDOM OF MUS’AB IBN UMAYR:

In the Battle of Uhud, Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه was given the position of carrying the banner of Islam, which is considered a great honor. He saw that the enemy intended to kill Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, so he raised the banner high and shouted “Allahu Akbar” loudly. He was distracting the enemies so they would not reach Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Just then, the enemies attacked Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه. During this, the enemies began to strike him. One by one, his hands were cut off. When one hand was cut and fell, he held the banner with the other hand. He kept saying one thing repeatedly:

Muhammad is only a messenger; other messengers have passed away before him.” (Quran 3:144)

After surviving for a long time, he finally fell and was martyred.

After a long time, when the battle ended, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came to the body of Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه. He saw that there was no proper shroud (Kafan) for him. If they covered his face, his feet remained exposed; if they covered his feet, his face was exposed. Then Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Place the shroud over the face of Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه and cover his feet with grass.”

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this verse of the Quran:

“Among the believers are men who have been true to what they have pledged to God.” (33:23)

Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه, who once wore silk clothes, left this world leaving everything behind; only his faith remained with him. But he attained everything with Allah.

CONCLUSION:

So, this was about the life of Mus’ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه. He is the companion who became the first ambassador of Islam and played a very big role in Yathrib by telling the people there about Islam. He was once the wealthy youth of Makkah who used fine clothes and expensive perfumes, but he left everything behind in the path of Islam and continued to walk on the path of truth. I hope you liked this story.

That is all for today. We will meet with a new topic next. Take care of yourself and your family. May Allah forgive all our sins and accept our supplications. Ameen.
